SEABROOK – The death of a Pearland man in the Seabrook jail has been ruled a suicide, but the attorney for the man's family says only the release of a video of his jail cell will determine how he died.

The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences has determined that suicide was the cause  of death for Richard Aycock, 26, who was found Saturday hanging by a bedsheet tied to a bunk bed in his cell.

Randall Kallinen, an attorney hired by Aycock's family to investigate his death, said the determination of the cause of death was based on questionable information supplied by  Seabrook police. "They take the information from whomever tells them, and they take it as gospel," Kallinen said.

Kallinen said only a video he believes exists of Aycock in his jail cell will settle the issue. "We're not saying it's murder, we're not saying it's suicide," he said. "We're saying we don't know until we get the video."

Kallinen on Tuesday served police with an order to retain evidence but has not formally requested a copy of any videos.

Aycock was arrested Friday for towing a trailer with a license plate stolen from a Seabrook police officer. Police found an AR-15 rifle in his pickup. Because Aycock had previously been convicted of burglary in Waller County, he was charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm.

The family has raised questions about Aycock's treatment by police, including a possible visit to his cell by a police sergeant whose stolen plates were allegedly on the trailer Aycock was towing.

Comments:
If I were a family member I would want to know what happened also, but let's face it, this seems like a troubled young soul. There's so much despair that can be seen in his mug shot alone. I'm sure this young man was fighting demons and his demise has nothing to do with murder by jailers or other officers.
