Leader of torturous attack gets 20 years

The ring leader in a vicious attack in which a Crosby man was stripped, bound, burned, shot and stabbed, but survived his injuries, was sentenced to 20 years in prison, Harris County prosecutors announced Thursday.

The victim testified this week against Billy Shawn Chauncey, 50,  who was convicted of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon during a  four-day trial in the 180th District Court.

Chauncey, who was the victims’ roommate, led three co-defendants _ who all regularly used methamphetamine _ in brutalizing the man, who they claimed owed them money.

During the January 2016 attack, the man was tied at the wrists and ankles with electrical tape, according to court testimony. A chemical cleaner was poured on his head  to sear him with severe burns.

One attacker  used a knife to carve his initials into the back of the man’s skull.

The man ultimately broke free with a surge of adrenaline as the attackers discussed unleashing a pit-bull on him. The man jumped through a second floor window and dashed down a roadway. He was shot in the back, but managed to reach the home of a neighbor who called police.

“This case would have been a murder case if the defendant had not managed to break loose from captivity,” Assistant District Attorney Daniel Simons said.

Although the victim has a past of drug use and prior convictions for theft, since the attack he has been clean of drugs and taken great steps to improve his life, Simons said.

“He got a job last week and was in tears when I told him the jury convicted the man who orchestrated the fourth-degree burns and gunshot wound that he will live with for the rest of his life,” Simons said.

Two of the man’s attackers have been convicted and sentenced to prison. A third accepted responsibility for his part has pleaded guilty. A fourth still faces trial for her role.
