On May 11, 2017, at 7:30 pm, an off-duty Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant was at the West Montgomery County Park Complex located at 16716 FM 149 in Montgomery, Texas enjoying sports with family.

While there, a citizen approached the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Sergeant and advised that a male was breaking into vehicles in the parking lot. The Sergeant began checking the area for the suspect, at which time he was approached by two more citizens who advised the suspect had just stolen a vehicle and was driving out of the park.  The citizen provided a description of the stolen vehicle and the Sergeant carefully went after the suspect while advising on-duty Deputies of the situation.

The stolen vehicle was stopped at FM 149 and Lone Star Parkway by responding Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Deputies as well as the off-duty Montgomery County Sergeant.   A traffic stop was conducted and a white male identified as 34 year-old Jonathon Drew Merdian was arrested for theft of a motor vehicle.

Sheriff Henderson wishes to commend the citizens for reporting the suspicious activity and the Sergeant for taking initiative to ensure the suspect didn’t get away while dispatching on-duty units to assist.  This is yet another example of Community Policing in action.
