On Sunday, April 9th 2017 at approximately 10:15pm a witness observed several subjects who appeared to be breaking into vehicles in the north parking lot of the San Luis Hotel & Resort on Seawall Blvd.

Philip Molis, a hotel employee responded to investigate and subsequently observed three black males near a vehicle and attempted to make contact with them. Upon contact, the suspects immediately fired multiple shots at Molis, striking him several times.

Lt Thomas Bushek of the Randall County Sheriff’s Office was attending a conference at the San Luis, and happened to be outside of the hotel when he heard the shots. Lt Bushek responded, found Molis bleeding from several gunshot wounds and began treating him.

Officer Pike from the Bayou Vista Police Department was the second person on scene, and began requesting units and rescue via his radio. Galveston Police Officers arrived less than a minute later and began assisting with Molis’ treatment until Galveston EMS made the scene and immediately transported him to UTMB where he was rushed into surgery.

Officers with the Galveston Police Department and surrounding agencies begin searching for suspects, ultimately finding one suspect and several key pieces of evidence, including a cell phone, and the gun used in the shooting. Six days later, on April 15th, Philip Molis died, succumbing to his injuries sustained the night of the shooting.

As the investigation continued to unfold, several pieces of evidence led detectives to the identification of the shooter including witness statements corroborated by surveillance video that put a subject named Brandon Ledford at and near the scene at the time of the shooting. Photos retrieved from a cell phone also showed Ledford holding the gun used in the shooting prior to the night of the murder.

And lastly, DNA evidence, retrieved from the inside of a latex glove found adjacent to the murder weapon, matched Ledford’s DNA. All of this evidence along with many other pieces of the puzzle allowed investigators along with assistance from the Galveston County District Attorney’s Office to issues a warrant for Murder with a $1,000,000 bond for Brandon Ledford. Ledford had previously been arrested on an unrelated charge and was being held at the Fort Bend County Jail, where the warrant was served.

We cannot speak highly enough of the team of detectives and officers that worked tirelessly over the six months to assure that the shooter in this case was brought to justice. Collaborations with our community partners also played a large role in our success with this case and the Galveston Police Department would like to thank all of those involved for their assistance.

Comments:
Excellent work detectives! So glad his family will have some closure though it could never be enough to replace what's missing from their family now. May Brandon spend the rest of his life behind bars with hard time and many sleepless nights
