(GALVESTON, TX) December 6, 2017 – City Manager Brian Maxwell announced his selection for the Police Chief to replace Chief Richard Boyle who is retiring in February 2018. The City received 46 applications for the position, a panel interviewed seven candidates and provided feedback to the Manager regarding their views and opinions of those interviewed. Based on the feedback from the panel, Maxwell narrowed the field to three candidates ultimately selecting Deputy Chief of Police Vernon Hale of the Dallas Police Department for the position.

As Deputy Chief of the Southeast Patrol Division Hale is currently responsible for an area that covers 65 square miles of the City and serves 176,000 citizens. He has been with the Dallas Police Department his entire career, starting as a patrol officer in 1992. Hale holds a Master’s of Science in Criminal Justice from the University of North Texas and a Bachelors of Arts & Applied Science in Criminal Justice, Dispute Resolution, and Emergency Management from UNT as well. He currently is an Adjunct Professor of Criminal Justice for the University of Phoenix, an instructor of Incident Command Simulation Training for Sam Houston University’s LEMIT, an Adjunct Professor of Homeland Security and Criminal Justice for El Centro College, and an Adjunct Professor for the Institute of Applied Economics at the University of North Texas.

Hale has accepted the City’s offer of employment which now moves forward to City Council for confirmation at its December 14thmeeting. Once confirmed, Hale will begin his career as Police Chief with the Galveston Police Department on January 2, 2018, where he will work with retiring Chief Boyle to ensure a smooth transition to his leadership.

“The two other finalists, George Buenik and Michael Gray both were exceptional candidates for the position and more than worthy of the consideration they were given,” said City Manager Brian Maxwell. “However, I am confident in my selection. I truly believe that Deputy Chief Hale is exactly who the Galveston Police Department needs as its Chief. He brings a multitude of diversified experience and skills, and we are honored that he has accepted our offer and look forward to seeing all that can be accomplished under his leadership.”

CHIEF Vernon Hale sounds rather nice to me. I believe there is so much more to Chief Hale than he has yet to let you see. Chief, Welcome to Galveston!

I suppose Maxwell is keeping his fingers crossed that Hale won't change his mind like he did last year when he accepted the chief's position in Winter Park, Florida.

Hope he doesn't plan on staying long.
