A new fancy television is reason to celebrate and brag, but leaving the box outside on the curb advertises to bad guys exactly where to find the cool toys.

This week, the folks at the Pearland Police Department released a photo on Facebook of a resident's curb, complete with a 70-inch TV box out front, next to the usual home trash.

"Out shopping this holiday season? So are crooks!" the police wrote in the caption. "Don't leave packing boxes like this in front of your home. By doing so you are letting would-be home burglars know you just bought a TV or other goodies."

Several residents in the Waldo neighborhood have been hit.

Police suggest breaking down the boxes and placing them in a garbage bin or taking them to an area recycling center.

"When not at home, close your blinds and lock the gate to your backyard," they added.  Once again, a no-brainer and sadly this is how the world is these days.

This time of year is also prime-time for those who steal packages from front doors after deliveries. It may be gift-giving season for most, but the holidays mean it's gift-taking season for thieves who prey on packages left on front doors.

Most people are now having packages delivered not to their homes, but to their places of business. If the boss is OK with the added distraction, it's a great way to sidestep thieves and to ensure the safety of a package.
