BROWNSVILLE — Osiel Cardenas Jr., the son of one of Mexico’s most notorious drug lords, was arrested Tuesday night on charges of impersonating a law enforcement officer and illegal possession of a firearm.

“He was in a bar waving a handgun around and causing alarm,” said J.J. Trevino, a Brownsville police spokesman. “Apparently he also had some sort of badge and was telling everyone he was a U.S. marshal.”

Cardenas Jr., 26, was escorted out of the bar where he was arrested by Brownsville police. He was charged with unlawfully carrying a weapon, public intoxication and false identification as a peace officer, according to Trevino.

Cardenas Jr. is the son of Osiel Cardenas, 50, the former leader of the Gulf Cartel who is incarcerated in the reputed Supermax prison in Colorado for his role in orchestrating drug cartel activities along the Texas-Mexico border.

The latest incident comes after Cardenas Jr. was sentenced in 2015 to 10 months in federal prison for attempting to smuggle military-grade ammunition into Mexico on New Year’s Eve. He was also fined $10,000 and given three years of supervised release.

Trevino said Cardenas Jr. was released by Brownsville police into the custody of U.S. marshals, who are holding him without bail on a parole
