After 42 years of law enforcement this is what I know.

Teachers Aren't Cops

In the wake of the tragic shootings at Santa Fe High School suggestions have been put forth in an effort to stop the insane violence at our schools.

One of the suggestions that has been mentioned several times is arming teachers to protect the students. Teachers aren't cops. They don't have the training to perform these duties. Training teachers to kill would be difficult at best. The majority of teachers don't possess the mindset to shoot people under any circumstance.

?I come from a family of educators. They are not killers. They shouldn't be trained or mandated to become killers.

I also come from a military and police family. They entered this field on their own volition. They possess the training and the mindset.

?I am tired of politicians wanting to arm educators.

It would be like sending a teacher to a gun fight. How do you think that would work out?

?You want to protect our students? Train people who want to do the job.

Run the school like an airport. Make it difficult to get into the secure area.

?Have volunteer parent Watchdog programs in our schools

?If you have a problem student make permanent expulsion legal in Texas again. Get rid of the trouble makers for good. Ban them from school property under threat of arrest.

As our children continue to be killed in what is supposed to be a safe environment, think about this.

The definition of insanity, is, doing the exact same thing over and over again, expecting it to change.

Has the entire educational community gone insane? We need change and we need it fast.

We, the adult parents are in charge of the school districts, the politicians and most importantly our children. Pay attention to the school board elections and hire enough experienced trained police officers to secure the campuses. One cop per campus is not enough. One cop per building, wing or area of learning is what we need.

Above all, love, listen and pay attention to your children.

It comes down to money. Always does. The priority in schools is skewed. Investments of money is made in athletics and stadiums. Insane salaries for coaches and megger salaries for teachers. Law Enforcement cost money ( salaries for officers are lower then coaches but yet those are the people walking in the situation and risking their lives) the system is behind the times its a reactive system and not a pro-active. Check priorities and line them appropriately. Athletics are great but not #1. Our schools must move with the times and see violence is rising. Focus on making our schools safer within the structures within the schools that allow the children to be safe in the school and the intruders away. Doors that can not be opened/re-enforced , rooms created in the classroom that offer safety from such attacks. Education and training of students and staff for active shooters. I am thankful that the Governor has stepped up and dialog is open from the top up. It will take all of us working together to find a swift solution.
Watch your children, talk to your children, encourage and up lift your children up. The work begins at home.
Huge Shout Out to the Hero's and Law Enforcement, Paramedics, Teachers, Aides, and Students for their courage and bravery.
Perhaps I don't have the answers. Right now I only have Hope. May God Bless.
