A suspected burglar hid Thursday on an island-like structure in the middle of a retention pond in southwest Houston after running from police.

According to police, the man broke into the Chick-fil-A in the 6800 block of West Sam Houston Parkway  just before 3 a.m.

When police arrived, the man ran into the woods and into a retention pond. Police said the man swam to the island-like structure and refused to get off.

“Anytime you are talking about water it’s dangerous,“ Houston police Lt. Larry Crowson.

Police called in a dive team to help get the man back to the shore. The SWAT team and Houston Fire Department were also called to assist.

The man was taken into custody around 6:15 a.m.
