Prisoners in 2016 (NCJ 251149) is Now Available.

This report, the 91st in a series of reports on prisoners that began in 1926, presents data from BJS’s National Prisoner Statistics (NPS) program on prisoners under the jurisdiction of state and federal correctional authorities at year-end 2016. Findings include data on prisoner counts, characteristics, admissions, releases, and prison capacity.

Selected Highlights:

  • The total number of prisoners under the jurisdiction of state and federal correctional authorities declined by 1% (21,200) in 2016, from 1,526,600 at year-end 2015 to 1,505,400 at yearend 2016.
  • More than half (54%) of state prisoners were serving sentences for violent offenses at yearend 2015 (the most recent year for which data were available).
  • Nearly half (47%) of federal prisoners incarcerated on September 30, 2016, had been sentenced for a drug offense (the most recent date for which federal offense data were available). More than 99 percent of those drug sentences were for trafficking.

Findings are based on data from BJS's NPS Program, which collects annual data from state departments of corrections and the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
