FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 20, 2017
Sgt Joaquin Salazar,
Copperas Cove Police Department

National Prescription Drug Take-Back Initiative

COPPERAS COVE, Texas – The Copperas Cove Police Department is locking arms once again with the DEA in an effort to prevent increased prescription pill abuse and theft. The Copperas Cove Police Department will be collecting potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs for destruction Monday - Friday from 8am to 5pm and also on April 29, 2017 from 10am to 2pm (National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day). A collection container will be located at the Police Department, located at 302 East Avenue E, Copperas Cove, Texas 76522. The service is free and anonymous with no questions asked.

The Take-Back program is headed by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the City of Copperas Cove is proud to be one of nearly four thousand collection sites Nationwide. This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Many Americans are not aware that medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are increasing at alarming rates, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, many Americans do not know how to properly dispose of their unused medicine, often flushing them down the toilet or throwing them away – both potential safety and health hazards.

The public can also find a nearby collection site by visiting www.nationaltakebackday.com, clicking on the “Got Drugs?” banner, and following the links to a database where a zip code can be entered.

Please feel free to contact one of the following drug enforcement officers with any questions regarding the program;
Sgt. Joaquin Salazar
