Area detention officers help deliver twins for inmate in labor
NAVARRO COUNTY, Texas (KWTX) Three detention officers became makeshift doctors, and heroes, when an inmate went into premature labor early Tuesday morning.
According to officials, Detention Sgt. Robin Woodall, and Detention Officers Betty Rivera and April Martin helped deliver the first of a set of twins at the Navarro County Jail, saving not only the babies' lives, but their mother's.
"The officers, without hesitation, worked together in a time sensitive situation to help deliver the first of the two babies," said Sheriff Elmer Tanner.
The Sheriff praised his staffers for showing such grace under pressure.
"I would like to praise their fast-thinking, dedication, calmness and compassion during a very stressful situation that could have ended very differently."
Some specific health questions could not be answered due to HIPAA laws, but Sheriff Tanner provided as much insight as he could about the family's status."Obviously with the situation of premature babies, the mother and the children’s health was of a main priority, and we have taken action to make sure they are receiving the proper medical care," he said.
