The search for a San Antonio dog is getting a boost from a Texas
favorite. Luby's is promising a month of free mac and cheese as a reward for
the safe return of Miko, an 8-year-old Pomeranian-Chihuahua mix.
Dog owner Yasmin Rodriguez Jaibat has been searching for her
furry "soulmate" since Friday, November 19 when he went missing from
a yard on Sweetbriar Avenue, between Culebra and Bandera. She started a social
media campaign, pleading for anyone with information on her dog to come
forward. Jaibat offered a $250 reward that's now getting a layer of cheese
thanks to Luby's.
The Texas cafeteria-style restaurant, which has a San
Antonio fan base spanning generations, is offering a month-long mac and cheese
feast for anyone who comes through with information to get Miko home. Jaibait,
a self-described Luby's "stan" explains that the connection isn't so
random.
About two weeks ago, she got an Instagram follow from
Luby's. Being a fan, the moment was exciting for Jaibat. She says she quipped
on her Instagram Story feature about the moment, which she treated like a badge
of honor. The jokes opened up a dialogue with the restaurant via direct
messaging. Jaibat says she's seen an increased online presence for the
restaurant, which she assumes is a result of new owner from Chicago stepping in
and "saving" Luby's from the point of no return after months of
teetering on the brink.
Whatever the case, after a few days of jokes and
interactions, Jaibat considered Luby's an online buddy she could reach out to.
When Miko went missing, she started building a social media phone tree of local
businesses that could help. Feliz Modern, the Pearl novelty boutique, shared
the news. Then she remembered Luby's. Jaibat said they'd "absolutely"
help and reposted Miko's flyer with the mac and cheese offer.

"I was just so touched, I didn't need any of
that," the owners says of the cheesy reward.
Unfortunately, Jaibat has not received any leads on Miko.
She says her dog is "off leash" and has lived with her from Germany
to New York City to Austin and has never strayed away.
While Jaibat is anxiously awaiting any news on her dog, she
says the showing of support from San Antonio is making her feel at home. She
says she's lived away from the city for 10 years and admits, she didn't want to
come back to a place where she previously felt she didn't fit in.
"The circumstance is horrible, but I have kept faith
because of San Antonians reposting and offering advice. People I don't know are
walking around to look for him. Local businesses are posting my flyer without
wanting anything in return," she says. "The experience of trying to
to find Miko has really showed me how big of a heart San Antonio has."
