League City Police Department detectives Monday were investigating what they suspected was a murder-suicide case in which a man shot his wife and then himself, spokesman officer John Griffith said.

The police department received a welfare check request about 9:30 a.m. Monday for a man who had not shown up for work, Griffith said.

Officers responded to the home at the 100 block of Magnolia Estates Drive, Griffith said.

“After checking the outside of the house, the officers saw what they believed to be a woman lying on the floor inside,” he said. “League City Police officers forced entry into the home and found a dead man and woman from what appears to be a murder-suicide.”

The victim was identified as Sally Staehli, 57, and the suspect was identified as Lance Staehli, 53, Griffith said.

Guns were found at the scene, Griffith said.

Sally Staehli was shot once in the back with a pistol, John “D.J.” Florence, chief investigator for the Galveston County Medical Examiner’s Office, said.

Lance Staehli had shot himself in the head with a shotgun, Florence said.

People with information should call detectives at 281-554-1885, Griffith said.
