WILDFIRE/TRAFFIC ALERT: FM 842 will be shut down from the intersection of state Highway 103 east to Moffett Road due to a grass fire that is now contained.

The fire was estimated at 7-10 acres, based on aerial measurements of the fire ground.

Lufkin Fire Department is on the scene along with Texas Forest Service and various volunteer agencies from around the county.

Though the blaze got within feet of houses along state Highway 103 east, the fire was quickly contained and no structures were affected.

Though we do not know what started the fire at this time, we once again are going to stress the importance of proper cigarette disposal. It is also important to ensure that tow chains are not creating sparks on the highway that could potentially ignite a grass fire

We remain under a severe wild fire threat with no end in the foreseeable future.
