A Galveston driver hit three police motorcycles while racing another vehicle on Tuesday, narrowly missing three Galveston police officers in the crash, authorities said.

At approximately 1 p.m. on Tuesday, an officer from Galveston Police Department's Traffic Safety Unit as well as two troopers with the Texas Department of Public Safety were running radar and checking for speeders in the 5000 block of Ave O.

The officers' police motorcycles, were parked on the south side of the street adjacent to the curb and the officers were standing next to the motorcycles.

While using laser radar to measure vehicles' speed, the officers observed two vehicles leave the stop light at 45th Street and appeared to be racing each other westbound down Ave O.

At one point, the officers clocked the vehicles' speed at 78 miles per hour, 48 miles per hour over the speed limit.

One of the vehicles turned south on 50th Street, before reaching the officers, but one of the drivers operating a black Chevrolet Cobalt, saw the officers and slammed on his brakes near 50th Street. The vehicle lost control and veered directly towards the officers. All three officers were able to dive out of the way at the last second; however the vehicle struck all three motorcycles, coming to rest on top of them.

The suspect driver was identified as Galveston resident, Melvin Valle, 18. None of the officers sustained injury, however Valle was transported to John Sealy Hospital at UTMB with minor injuries to his arm.

Upon his discharge from the hospital, Valle will be taken into custody for Racing and Reckless Driving with a $10,000 bond.

Valle previously pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of failing to give his identity to a League City police officer after an arrest in June, according to Department of Public Safety records.
