FORT WORTH, Texas - On June 5, 2019, at 8:53 p.m., Fort Worth Police South Division officers were dispatched to 4949 Rickee Drive in reference to a Burglary in Progress call with weapons reported to have been involved. The first officer arriving on the scene confronted the suspect. During this contact, the suspect was shot and transported to a local hospital. As with any Critical Police Incident, the Major Case Unit and Internal Affairs Unit responded to the scene to begin an investigation into the matter. As the investigation continued through the night, several details are being provided to clarify the initial statement from the department.

While officers were responding to the call location, the complainant reported that the suspect was threatening the complainant with a gun as well as a knife.  An officer arrived on scene and confronted the suspect, later identified as Esteban Vasquez h/m 03/23/92, outside in the front yard. The officer attempted to detain Vasquez who was visibly agitated and verbally non-compliant. While attempting to gain compliance in order to handcuff Vasquez, he told the officer that he was not going to jail. The officer continued issuing numerous verbal commands, requested assistance over his police radio, and continued his attempts to gain compliance. The officer soon warned Vasquez that he would deploy his taser. Vasquez did not comply and warned the officer to put his taser away. The officer subsequently deployed the taser so Vasquez could be safely handcuffed. Vasquez quickly removed the wires from the probes, which rendered the taser ineffective. Vasquez then stood and charged towards the officer. The officer, observing that Vasquez was significantly larger than himself and fearing for his life, drew his handgun and fired at Vasquez, striking him in the upper torso.

Vasquez was transported to a local hospital where he is listed in critical condition. Officers soon recovered knives from the scene.

Fort Worth Police Major Case detectives are leading the investigation and will be analyzing all available evidence. Upon conclusion of the criminal investigation, the case will be submitted to the Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office for review. No officers were injured during this incident.

Vasquez has been charged with Aggravated Assault – Family Member, Assault Bodily Injury – Strangulation/Family Member, Reckless Damage and Destruction, and local warrants.

The involved officer has been with the Fort Worth Police Department for 2 years and was placed on administrative leave which is standard procedure on every Critical Police Incident.
