Houston police released bodycam footage Thursday showing several officers who shot and killed 27-year-old Nicolas Chavez and drew ire from the Houston cop union.

Chavez was killed in early May when several officers opened fire as he grabbed an empty Taser outside a northeast Houston restaurant. He was apparently going through some kind of crisis, police said.

Hours before releasing the video, Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo fired four of the officers involved.

The move was quickly admonished by Joe Gamaldi, president of the Houston Police Officers’ Union, who called Acevedo’s decision “unjust and deplorable.”

“Even if you deescalate, retreat, follow policy, training and the will still lose your job as a Houston Police Officer,” Gamaldi tweeted.

At a press conference, Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner stood beside Acevedo on the firings.

“This is not an indictment on 5,300 police officers,” Turner said. “But it does say for our city that we are all accountable.”

The criminal investigation still continues.

The action of these officers cannot be defended.
The Houston Police Officers Union president continues to act like this is acceptable. They did not deescalate, retreat, follow policy or the law and they failed to follow training.
Twenty one shots from four officers into an unarmed, wounded suspect is an example of mass hysteria and shows the public that HPD Officers Union president is totally out of touch with reality.
The days of officers producing a false narrative to try to cover up criminal acts is rapidly drawing to a close.
