HOUSTON — The Coast Guard and Texas Game Wardens are scheduled to impart safety tips and offer boat rides during a National Safe Boating Week media event in Galveston, Texas, Friday.

Coast Guard Station Galveston search and rescue subject matter experts, Coast Guard Auxiliary members and local Texas Game Wardens will be available for interviews to help keep the public informed of safe boating practices as weather conditions improve and Memorial Day Weekend approaches.

The information discussed will include general boating safety tips such as life jacket regulations, kayak identification decals, filing a float plan, and rip and tidal currents.

Station Galveston personnel and Texas Game Wardens will also offer boat rides for media members during which boat crews will demonstrate rescue techniques.

National Safe Boating Week is a week-long annual campaign for the Coast Guard and agency partners to emphasize the importance of safe boating practices and the use of boating safety equipment. This year, National Safe Boating Week spans May 20-26.

With approximately 1.7 million surface acres of freshwater inland lakes, 4 million acres of salt water and 80,000 miles of rivers and streams statewide, there are ample opportunities for Texans to enjoy the summer months on the water.

Last Memorial Day weekend, 25 boating accidents occurred throughout Texas; none were fatal. This holiday, Texas Game Wardens and the Coast Guard are combining their efforts and increasing patrols to ensure boaters and their families stay safe.

For more information on safe boating, please visit the U.S. Coast Guard’s Boating Safety Division, the National Safe Boating Council and the Texas Parks & Wildlife Boater Education Program.
