On Wednesday September 23, The Exchange Club of Fort Bend presented Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Deputy Ron Skarpa with the prestigious “Officer of the Year” award for his life-saving actions.

On Friday April 3, 2020 Deputy Skarpa was patrolling near LaCenterra at Cinco Ranch, an area where the Sheriff’s Office had previously investigated suicides. Around 1:15 p.m. Deputy Skarpa noticed a distressed teenager run up the parking garage ramp and climb onto the top ledge. While talking to the distraught teenager, Deputy Skarpa seized an opportunity to wrap his arms around her and pulled her off the ledge. As a result, the teenager received the appropriate mental health treatment needed.

“Deputy Skarpa’s ability to recognize a crisis unfolding saved a life that day,” said Sheriff Troy Nehls. “We are truly proud of Deputy Skarpa.”
