TCSO Enforcement Initiative Takes Dangerous Trucks Off Roadways

From March 28 – April 23, 2022, TCSO’s Commercial Vehicle Enforcement (CVE) Unit conducted an enforcement initiative to address commercial vehicle violations in the southeast section of Travis County. The areas specifically targeted were US 183 South, FM 812, DG Collins Rd, McKinney Falls Pkwy, and southern portions of SH 130.

The initiative was conducted to address an uptick in Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) collisions, several of which resulted in fatalities. Stops were conducted in a random manner and included the Level 1 inspection, following Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration guidelines and regulations. CVE Deputies conducted three weeks of daytime operations from 6am to 4pm, and one week of afternoon operations from 12 noon to 10 pm.
The Level 1 inspection is the most in-depth inspection, and includes the following: driver interview, carrier identification, driver’s license status, medical examination status, hours of service, inspection of vehicle equipment and all mechanical components of the vehicle, including brakes, tires, frame, air loss, suspension, steering components, lighting, ABS systems and load securement.

Results are as follows (definitions below the stats):
Number of stops: 82
Out of Service Violations: 157
Additional violations: 878
Out of Service Drivers: 31
Out of Service Vehicles: 59
Citations issued: 47
Out of Service Violations – Damaged or unsafe equipment or mechanical parts
Additional Violations – Violations that aren’t severe enough to require a CMV to be taken out of service
Out of Service Drivers – Driver violations that result in the driver being taken out of service immediately (30 of these violators were unlicensed drivers.)
Out of Service Vehicles – Violations so severe, the CMV was taken out of service and towed

TCSO’s Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit will continue to work to ensure commercial vehicle traffic is operating in a safe, responsible manner around the general motoring public in Travis County.
