It's been a busy week of training here at APPD. Here is what we
have been up to this week:
TCO Instructor Rycca Martinez and TCO Instructor John Flowers
instructed 27 students in TCIC and NCIC procedures. Students in this course
consisted of Telecommunications Officers, Jailers, and Police Officers from
APPD and surrounding agencies. This course is required for all new TCO's,
Jailers, and Peace Officers within their first year of employment and must be
renewed every two years. For most of the attendees, this was their first time
taking this course.
Sgt. Alvin Luker and Sgt. Travis Baker instructed 8 APPD
Officers in S.F.S.T. (Standardized Field Sobriety Testing) update procedures.
All officers go through this course while in the Police Academy but must
recertify every two years. This course's primary purpose is to improve the
consistency of SFST's and keep officers up to date and proficient. Last year
APPD Officers made 64 arrests for DWI-related offenses. According to the Texas Department of Transportation, in 2019
there were 24,666 DWI-related crashes in Texas, resulting in 900 fatalities and
2,152 serious injuries. APPD continuously ensures our officers are trained to
locate and arrest DWI drivers to increase safety on our roadways.
Lastly, all our investigators attended a course for
interrogations designed for criminal investigators and first responders. This
course was put on by the LLRMI (Legal & Liability Risk Management
Institute) and instructed by Stan B. Walters, who has spent nearly 4 decades
studying and researching the science of interview and interrogation.
Aransas Pass Police Department takes pride in providing our
officers and our surrounding partners with the best training available.
