A law enforcement officer died Friday night after being shot
at a high school basketball game in New Orleans.
According to NOPD Superintendent Shaun Ferguson, the victim
was a Tulane University police officer and a reserve officer with the 2nd City
Court Constable.
The shooting took place around 6:15 p.m. at a game on the
campus of George Washington Carver High School, WGNO reports. NOPD announced an
hour later that the officer had died from his injuries.
Ferguson said the officer, whose identity is being withheld
at this time, attempted to intervene when an individual who had a previous
altercation with a staff member at the school attempted to enter the basketball
game. The officer attempted to escort the individual out of the building, when
Ferguson said the suspect pulled out a weapon and fired, striking the officer
in his chest.
According to WGNO, the shooting took place in the foyer of
the building, in an area where tickets were being accepted.
Paramedics worked on the injured officer while transporting
him to UMC, according to radio communications. According to the same
communications, a suspect was taken into custody.
