APD Expands Online Reporting Options

 

 

The Austin Police Department (APD) has expanded the options for citizens to file non-emergency police reports online. The website, www.ireportaustin.com, includes the following categories:

             Assault

             Threats

             Burglary

             Criminal Mischief

             Fraud

             Harassment

             Incident Involving a Motor Vehicle

             Lost Property

             Theft

The online reporting tool provides an easily-accessible platform for people to create a police report without having to wait for a call back from a non-emergency operator to take the report, making the process more efficient.

 

Once the person filing the report (the complainant) chooses the appropriate category, they will answer a series of questions specific to the offense. From there, the APD Record’s Division will review the report for completeness and take one of the following actions: 1. approve the report 2. send the report back to the complainant for more information or 3. reject the report. A report can be rejected for several reasons: the incident did not occur within APD’s jurisdiction, the issue is a civil matter, there is no response after APD has made two attempts to reach the complainant or because the report is a duplicate. 

 

In order to expedite approval of a report, it is vital to provide as much information as possible in response to each of the questions, including a valid address and/or cross streets for the incident, if applicable.

 

The review process may take up to 10 days. Once approved, the complainant will receive an Austin Police Department case number.

 

There are several options available for people to request a copy of a police report once it has been accepted.

 

People can access the public portion of a report, which does not include a narrative, on the APD public information report database at: https://www.austintexas.gov/police/reports/index.cfm.

 

People may request a copy of the full report online at www.austintexas.gov/PIR. Due to the volume of requests APD receives, it may take 45 to 60 days (or longer) to fulfill a request, depending on the complexity of the inquiry. In order to maintain the integrity of ongoing investigations, APD does not typically release a copy of a report on open cases. In order to verify the status of a case, the complainant should contact the assigned detective.
