Suspect Arrested, Charged in DWI Crash at 900 Gulf Freeway

Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in a DWI crash at 900 Gulf Freeway (South Interstate Highway 45) about 2:30 a.m. on Saturday (June 2).

The suspect, Nicole Bertoldi (w/f, 28) is charged with intoxicated assault in the 184th State District Court.  A booking photo of Bertoldi, who remains hospitalized, is not available for release at this time.

The male victim, 67, was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital in critical condition.

HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant E. Fendia and Officer F. Flynn reported:

Callers reported a wrong way driver on the freeways near downtown.  Moments later, an HPD patrol officer observed a crash at the above address that appeared to be caused by a wrong way driver.

Further investigation determined Bertoldi was driving a white Toyota Corolla when she collided head on with a white Kia Optima.  Responding HPD officers performed CPR on the victim, a passenger in the Kia, until paramedics arrived and transported him to the hospital.

Bertoldi admitted to officers she had been drinking prior to the crash.  She was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.  Once there, Bertoldi was evaluated by an HPD DWI Task Force officer and subsequently charged with intoxicated assault.
