GALVESTON – On Wednesday, May 8, 2019, Robert McNeal was found guilty by a Galveston County jury for the offense of Aggravated Sexual Assault of a Child. On May 9th, 2019 that same jury sentenced him to life in prison.

In October, 2016 the Galveston Police Department received a call from Texas Children’s Hospital that a woman and her child were there to report a sexual assault of a child that occurred in 2014.

Galveston Police Officers made contact with the victim and set up an interview at the Child Advocacy Center of Galveston County. During the interview the victim out-cried that Robert McNeal had sexually assaulted the victim on multiple occasions over a period of a few months.

While investigating this offense Galveston Police Officer Jeff Banks discovered that Robert McNeal had been previously arrested and charged with prior sexual offenses against children.

During the punishment phase of the trial the State introduced evidence of two additional victims who testified that Robert McNeal had sexually abused them in 2009.

Aggravated Sexual Assault of a Child carries a punishment from five years to ninety-nine years or life in prison.

After the conclusion of the evidence, the jury assessed a punishment of life in prison.

The defendant will not become eligible for parole until he serves thirty years of his sentence.

Robert McNeal was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Barbara Agbu and Chief Assistant District Attorney Matthew Shawhan in the 212th District Court, with Judge Patricia Grady presiding. The District Attorney’s Office would like to thank the Galveston Police Department and the Child Advocacy Center of Galveston County for their excellent work in investigating this case.
