On June 25, 2018, at approximately 3 a.m., the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office received a request from Galveston Police Department to assist in the investigation of an Officer involved shooting at the 5300 block of Ave. L. 

GPD Officers reported observing a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot of Sonny’s Convenience Store located at 51^st and Broadway. Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop which resulted in the vehicle fleeing from them. When the vehicle stopped, the driver fled on foot and into a vacant lot.  After giving verbal commands to the suspect, the officer fired two rounds from his service weapon striking the fleeing suspect (identified as Luis Fernendo Argueta H/M 19yoa).  Argueta was transported to UTMB Hospital where he died from his wounds. A weapon was recovered at the scene by investigators.

The Galveston County Sheriff’s Office and the Galveston County District Attorney’s Office are investigating the incident. Argueta was transported to the Galveston County Medical Examiner’s Office pending an autopsy. Witnesses are being interviewed and the investigation continues.
