No arrests had been made, but one person was detained in connection to the shooting, and police said evidence would be referred to a grand jury.

About 1:30 a.m., police officers on patrol heard gunshots near the 2800 block of 61st Street, according to a news release.

Officers saw an SUV leaving the area and stopped it in the 6100 block of Seawall Boulevard. Two people were in the SUV, according to police.

A man who was shot in the chest died at the scene, police said. Another man was taken to a University of Texas Medical Branch hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police didn’t immediately identify the person killed in the shooting because his family hadn’t been notified.

Police didn’t immediately announce any arrests connected to the shooting, but said one “subject” had been detained near the shooting scene, according to the news release. The subject wasn’t immediately identified.

A witness told police there had been an argument before the shooting. Multiple handguns were seized at the scene, police said.

A prosecutor was called to the scene, police said.

The police department said information about the shooting would be presented to a grand jury. Generally, it’s up to prosecutors to decide whether to immediately file charges, or to later allow a grand jury to decide whether there’s enough evidence to support a criminal charge.
